Orchard Audio PecanPi + Streamer Review - Can Streaming Beat Vinyl Records?
In this video, I discuss and review the Orchard Audio PecanPi+ Streamer. As you know, I love vinyl but sometimes the convenience of streaming is necessary. How does the PecanPi+ Streamer stack up in sound quality compared to other DACS and Vinyl Records? I did an in depth blind test to find out. The results were pretty shocking. So for a change of pace, let's discuss the value of a good streamer and all of the situations where a good streamer can enhance our lives. Even though vinyl is my favorite format, it's really all about the music we love.
Here's the link to check out the Orchard Audio website for more information.

I wish you would give SACD a try. It's better than streaming in terms of sound quality - but not convenience. And - you might kill me for saying this - it's better than vinyl! I agree with you on the U2 sound quality. I love their music but the sound quality mostly sucks. The bass and the drums are too low in level on most songs. It's kinda weak. It's almost like the guitarist and the singer both have huge egos to the point they don't want to share the spotlight with the rhythm section! Did I say that? Lol! I wish they would remaster their music to do justice to their great drumming and innovative bass lines. It's so sad because their music is so good.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy 13 годин тому

If it's possible, I would love for someone to improve the sound quality of U2's music. There are some pretty big egos in that band but they seem like good guys living clean lives. Lol. Thank you and have a great week. 🤗❤️

I am a huge vinyl fan and I love the connection I have with the music when spinning a good record but saying that…. Lossless streaming can beat vinyl at times. I have an over 50K invested in my 2 channel stereo so I feel I get fairly good quality sound from any digital or analog music I play. I can and have matched up songs from both sources and have found both to sound better reproducing the music. So it all comes down to your ear and how you prefer it. Super detailed and critical of every detail goes to the digital file. But I don’t normally prefer this. I like a slightly warmed over sound with more soul and this is why I personally prefer vinyl. But again, this changes with music too. If I’m listening to Etta James belt out something soulful and full of feelings then vinyl 100%… But then you have Rage Against the Machine that’s just an attack of cymbals and guitar and I think the digital file is better at reproducing the sound rather than a needle in a groove. I still have the record though….

Perfectly said. There is a lot to enjoy with both formats. When it comes to those old record classics, vinyl suits me. For more modern music streaming is a great way to go. Thank you and have a great week. 🤗❤️

Absolutely! I couldn't agree more, especially when it comes to buying records that you'll actually play. In the end, I ended up selling them at a loss.

I was at my hi-fi dealers a few months ago listening to some amps, in one of the demo rooms they had a D'agostino amplifier with a pair of Marten speakers and a streamer connected to it as background music for the staff whilst awaiting a client to listen to said system, I think the cost of that system was around £70K plus and it sounded terrible. So no, streaming will NEVER sound as good as vinyl or CD, this was using hi res files too, I was NOT impressed.

@@MelindaMurphy It was Melinda yes, very expensive so it just goes to show you that SYNERGY of your hi-fi components is way more important than just a cost thing, my own system is no where near in total but sounds so good in comparison, I love it and won't change a thing. I AM thinking of getting a streamer but lit will be used for 2 things only, music while I do other things and finding more music I LIKE and will then buy on vinyl first choice, CD 2nd choice. Hey wait a minute...aren't you supposed to be packing?? 😁 I've been "streaming" almost exclusively for a decade now (meaning, I no longer have a CD/SACD player in the system). Qobuz has only been in my setup for four or so year, but I have thousands of albums on a network server, and use Roon to catalog and stream it to multiple devices in the house. All this transformed how I play digital music. And I buy downloads now, in high-res if available (as most new releases are). Life is good! I hate to say it, but it cost me much more than I cared to spend to get my digital side to sound as good as the analog. Yet it was worth it, given how much I play music around the house. There is so much music *not* on vinyl that I can't see ever being exclusively one or the other. Job 1 for me is being a music lover, regardless of format! 👍

Streaming is dangerous territory because it allows you to multi-task. I’ve played records a lot less for the past 10 years than I did before, but end up to listening to more music. The convenience is the biggest factor and can have a great effect as time goes by. It literally is the bandwagon of the future although it won’t stop you from buying records which is an affliction that many vinyl enthusiasts find difficult to escape from. Having said that, be advised to proceed with caution as you do not want to follow the path of neglecting your collection which may invariably occur the day you add a really good streamer to your equipment set-up.

We travel in an RV. I have a Yamaha WXA-50 and a Dell mini 9020 loaded down with flac files I have ripped from CD, vinyl or purchased. Everything is 44/16 or better. Streaming digital files doesn't have to suck, but most people equate it with low quality mp3s because they don't know any better.

You're absolutely right. I admit that I was surprised at how good streaming can be. This streamer changed my mind. Traveling in an RV would be such a cool adventure. Good for you. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.

It's nice, the people that kept it alive , promoted records, bought loads when they were cheap will someday be selling off their enormous collections or passing them down and the circle of life continues. So many complaints about how expensive records are now from people with shelves heaving with exclusives behind them online right now 😂 like yeah, you bought them all and made them popular. You'll have to sell them for them to begin cheap bargains again. The irony

The Orchard streaner does sound impressive! I do stream music. Streaming is fascinating to me, but the dac in the streamer is more fascinating to me than the streamer, but I slightly prefer cds over streaming. And it is fascinating that a streamer has memory that is similar to a hard drive. The cd spools hold 100 cds. That where I store my cds. So my cds dont require much storage space, about the same space as a streamer. I also have copied my cds to a hard drive that dont sound as good as cds. I also copy youtube record videos to a hard drive, using Wondershare software WAV files that I bought on the internet, that sound better than store bought cds, pretty close to record sounding, without worrying about records wearing out. I also copy records straight to a hard drive, & back them up to a second hard drive. Now dacs are a different story, good for streaming & cds. A dvd player & a dac can be combined to play music, or use a cd player. Here is the reason a cd player isnt as good. A cd player is actually a dac & a cd players turntable in 1 box. Usually the cd transport wears out first & you lose the whole box with the dac in the box. With a dvd player as a transport, if it wears out, you still have the dac. The reason you need a dvd player as a transport, but cant use a dvd player as a transport, is that a cd player dont have a digital connector to hook up the dac. Never buy an expensive transport as it is a waste of money. Also a tiny cheap dac is great to hook up to a laptop cd burner, using cheap Bose headphones.

Nice review, but different at the same time. I glad that you are expanding your horizons. I wanted to ask you a question. Did MOFI do a one step on the Eagles-Long Road Out of Eden? Thank you in advance. Dennis

I have 30 feet of albums I bought until they evaporated in 1989. I didn't listen to them much but in 2016 I quit listening to them altogether after we moved because the albums are in the basement due to lack of room. Instead I stream off a computer in my house that I keep ripped CDs on. I stream Pandora when I am in my old pickup truck. I also spent a long trip with my brother who uses Tidal which is a higher end streaming service. Probably because I watch this channel, I recently decided that I could store a couple feet of albums upstairs and have a small selection of LPs to listen to. Each time I put an album on I say to myself "wow this LP sounds much better than streaming." Claims can be made that streamed music has better separation, more accurate bass, no nicks or hiss, and other positives, but in the end digital music doesn't have the freshness of analog LPs. Digital is missing something and it just doesn't sound as good. But the convenience of digital makes it good enough. I got my first car in 1973 when all they had was radios. The first thing I did was install a cassette deck because you can't play records in your car. But I didn't buy pre-recorded cassettes because it was obvious they wouldn't last. Instead I always bought the album and recorded chrome 90 minute cassettes for the car. Because of that I still have every album in excellent condition 50 years later. Digital is the modern day cassette. We have to use digital in vehicles for the same reason I used cassettes - because it can handle bumps. I found that the Tidal streaming service doesn't have a lot of content in the same way Blockbuster only had a small fraction of the possible movies. If you don't mind being limited to what the streaming service wants you to listen to, then they are fine.

I agree that there is something very special about the sound of vinyl. It's my preferred format. But when I can't listen to vinyl, I want to stream the best sound quality possible. That's why I really like this PecanPi+ streamer. I love that you have started listening to vinyl again. ❤️🤗 Thank you and take care.

I have 3 of the original Kiss albums. A VG that I got years ago at a flea market, a VG+ and a. near mint. On all the other copies with Kissin' Time, it's the only bad song on the album.

let’s not forget about so called local streaming from NAS, I subscribe to qobuz but I also have about 10 000 albums on NAS it all boils down to the streamer and dac used but most important how digital file was created, mastering, source used, at the end of the day digital media may play at nice quality but also may sound bad and the same goes toward vinyl

Personally, I find it very difficult to believe that people can hear differences in equipment. I think a lot of it falls into the realm of "self-fulling prophecy" where people imagine they can actually hear the difference because they've already told themselves they will. Although not audio related I went through a situation with a co-worker who was demanding a faster computer in our talk studio. This goes WAY back to the days of the introduction of the Pentium processor, and that's what he wanted. He told us he couldn't tolerate how slow the 486 was. I approached management and they refused to allow the funds to be used. But the co-worker still demanded a faster machine. I finally called our IT supply guy and asked him if he had a "PENTIUM" sticker in his shop. He did, and dropped it off. I put the sticker on the 486 computer, and when my co-worker arrived I told him we were able to get his Pentium computer. Overjoyed, he quickly walked to the talk studio to try it out. "Wow, this is so much faster! Thank you!" My boss couldn't believe I pulled it off, and we never heard another complaint.

I'm sure that does happen. That's why I do blind tests. I have no idea what I'm listening to in the comparisons, I just have to say what I think. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
